This is a homestead on Pine Creek, near Clarno, Wheeler County, Oregon.  This is an area I’m quite familiar with, having worked there at Hancock Field Station with OMSI for those three seasons.  It seems like so long ago now.  It’s the most genuine of place I’ve ever lived, and I’ve lived in a few like Elko, Nevada, and La Grande, Oregon.  There’s not much more than cattle ranches there, with a few buckaroos to spice things up at the Shamrock in Fossil on a Saturday night.  But it’s really the way that nature takes more of a front seat, due to the lack of people, than in our developed environments.  I love that.  It seems much more balanced, where people are part of things, but don’t predominate over animals, plants, the stars at night, an undammed river.  The John Day runs through this country, and was dropping from flood stage when I visited.  There was actually more tourists in the area than at any other time of year.  June, with several biker tours & rallies, along with fisherman and others who know this is the best time to boat the class II/III river.  The tiny town of Mitchell seemed absolutely crowded in fact.  How funny!  It’s one of my favorite areas of Oregon, possibly the favorite.
