The green valleys of Malheur Wildlife Refuge during a wet spring.  The snow is still deep up on Steens Mountain.  Malheur is a major stopover for migrating birds, and is in the southeast corner of Oregon.

This is a Kiger Mustang, part of the Steens Mountain herd in southeastern Oregon near the mouth of Kiger Gorge (now under snow).  We saw a herd of about 40, with 4 foals, but they kept their distance from us.  This one was in a small group with 3 mares closer to the road.

Just back from Malheur Wildlife refuge in SE Oregon.  Nearly every group of large trees in this arid, mostly treeless region has a great-horned owl nest.  This one is in a poplar growing in the small settlement of Frenchglen.  At least one of the chicks is helping mom (very nearby) keep watch on the strange being with the big lens.

I’m off to Malheur & Steens Mtn tomorrow, but will try to do one or two photo blogs from Frenchglen if they have internet.  Back in 4 days hopefully with a lot of bird photos.  By the way, albums from my trips around North America and around the world are on my facebook page: michaeljflaherty/facebook.com

This true harbinger of warm weather graces Oregon’s west side forests once Spring is about half over.  And this evening feels warmer than it’s been for a long time.  So maybe we aren’t headed back into winter after all.  It is the lovely trillium of course.

A beautiful if a little cool spring day in Portland, and around mid-day I went with Michelle my roommate downtown to Portland Farmer’s Market.  A lot of greens, and a lot of people, a nice atmosphere all around.
