Traveling through the remote stretch of desert in eastern California’s Panamint Valley, I saw this small group of feral burros (descendants of miner’s burros set free in the 1800s and early 1900s) and just had to see how close I could get. They were curious, but the males (this is two couples) definitely looked to be healthy and ready to defend their women. So I used the body language I’ve learned to use with horses when you want them to relax.
